Eliminating dog-mediated rabies: challenges and strategies

Abstract Rabies is an acute encephalitis caused by a lyssavirus . It primarily transmitted through bites of infected dogs which results in the worldwide death estimated 59000 humans every year. The disease preventable application post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and its elimination has been demonstrated many countries applying multiple interventions simultaneously. Nonetheless, rabies still widespread developing countries, due to poor implementation intervention strategies that include inadequate dog-bite wound management practices, unavailability/unaffordability PEP communities, failure control free-roaming wildlife, improper dog population management, weak surveillance diagnostic facilities lack One Health approach disease. In this review, dog-mediated were discussed. We recommend against involving all concerned stakeholders selected urban rural areas where endemic. An empirical demonstration freedom needed convince policymakers invest prevention on national level. This multifaceted model will enhance likelihood achieving goal global eradication 2030.
